About the Artist

Vetrea Slack Ruffin is a national recording artist, songwriter, workshop conductor and vocal instructor. Her style of music is classic contemporary gospel. Vetrea is married to Dr. Paul Ruffin (a physicists and an inventor) for more than 34 years. They have two daughters: Lacretia (Kellen) Conaway and Angelica Ruffin, who sing with her. She has three grandchildren: Jared, Victoria, and Kellen, II. She was raised in East St. Louis, IL. She has been a resident of Huntsville, AL for more than 34 years.

When Vetrea was very young, her mother formed a family gospel group, "The Slack Family." They sang all over Missouri and Illinois. Her mom was her inspiration, both musically and spiritually. Vetrea accepted the Lord at the age of 13. At the age of 14 she organized her first youth choir in St. Louis. After she was married, she began assisting churches in organizing their church choirs.

She later realized the gift to write music through the medium of dreams. After receiving prophesy by Evan. Joe Mack Bankhead, confirming that God would use her to write songs, she became confident to finish the songs that God had given her through dreams. The songs that she has submitted is one of those songs.

She has completed two books (Using You Vocal Instrument and Church Choir Administration). Her family group has two CDs entitled, "Help Me Render Completely" and "House of Worship." They have a video entitled, "That's Why I Call His Name," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTubmpKKIMQ).

Among many other obligations, Vetrea serves on the Church of God in Christ International Music Department's Executive Board. Her husband pastors Forge Temple Church of God in Christ in Birmingham, AL where she serves as First Lady and Minister of Music, among many other things.

After she completed her first CD, her mother (Vetrea Mae Davidson Slack--her mentor) passed away at 61 years of age after having a massive heart attack in November 2001. Her mother had an opportunity to sing with Vetrea on that CD project. Her mother was her mentor.
